Nicotine or tobacco when smoked reduces vitiated kapha and vata dosha and increases Pitta dosha. Nicotine vapour can reach the brain quickly due to smoking or passive smoking. People start smoking to get stress relief and can get highly addicted due to stressful work/ life style. Prolonged and excessive use of tobacco smoking due to addiction leads to serious health hazards. One of the best ways to quit smoking is by herbal smoking itself. Herbal smoking is known as Dhumapana in Ayurveda and pugai in Siddha medicine and according to these traditions, a subject who wishes to take care of his or her health should inhale herbal smoke to treat or to prevent the onset of diseases associated with Kapha and Vata. Herbal smoking is the best alternative for regular smoking. When the herbs get burnt, it leads to a smoke dispersion of fine particles of medicinal compounds, and this when inhaled increases one’s pitta, antagonizes subject’s kapha and has a cleansing action on the air passages. The aggravated doshas, especially the kapha, seated in the nose, throat and chest, are subsided with dhumapana. Combined with ahealthy diet, physical exercise, and yoga techniques/therapies such as pranayama and kapalabadhi, herbal smoking may help people to get rid of smoking habit easily, without any adverse effects. Herbal smoking is the first step to overcome the craving for nicotine.

Ayurveda is an ancient Hindu traditional medicinal system native to the Indian subcontinent which is based on the three concepts: Gunas, Dravyas and Doshas in which Gunas means qualities, Dravya means five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) and Dosha means movement (Kapha, Pitta and Vata). Gunas are of three basic types: i.e., Sattva or pure, Rajas or excitable and Tamas or indifferent (inertia).Human body is made up of Panchamahabhutas, the five elements of creation i.e., ether (space), air (movement), fire (transformation), water (fluidity) and earth (crystallization) which are principle sources of atomic energy, electrical energy, radiant energy, chemical energy and mechanical energy, respectively for the body. Imbalance in Panchamahabhutas results in diseases and they need to be balanced for removal of diseases and maintenance of good health and this can be done using the Panchagavya due to their inherent association with the five elements which is as follows: Cow dung- Earth, Cow urine-Water, Cow Milk-Fire, Cow Curd- Air and Cow Ghee Space.

Tobacco in all forms is dangerous for human health and causes various diseases such as heart attack, hypertension, strokes, pulmonary disease and cancer. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer whereas oral cancer is mainly caused by chewing of tobacco. Similar to the first hand smoking, passive smoking also affects a healthy human. Governments of most of the countries do not want to stop the use of tobacco and related products because it is one of the major sources of their income. The health hazards caused by tobacco products hugely outweighs any economic benefit coming through their manufacture and sale. Although it will be a big challenge to stop the complete use of tobacco but it is not an impossible task to bring in behavioral change.
